From its beginnings a half-century ago, Stony Brook University has been characterized by innovation, energy, and progress, transforming the lives of people who came there earn degrees, work, and make groundbreaking discoveries. Continuing developments have turned what was once a small teacher preparation college into an internationally recognized research institution that is changing the world.

Stony Brook University is one of four state university centers and is considered the flagship institution of the State University of New York.  Its reach extends from the edges of its 1,039-acre campus on Long Island’s North Shore – encompassing an academic mall, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex, a performing arts center, Stony Brook University Medical Center, the Health Sciences Center, and the Veterans Home – to Stony Brook Manhattan, a new Research and Development Park, three business incubators including one at Calverton, New York. Stony Brook Southampton campus too, on Long Island’s east end, is an active part of the growing university. Stony Brook also co-manages Brookhaven National Laboratory, joining Princeton, the University of Chicago, Stanford, and the University of California as the only major institutions involved in a research collaboration with a national lab.  Stony Brook is one of 63 leading research universities in the American Association of Universities (AAU). Stony Brook University Medical Center is Suffolk County’s only tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and is the only academic medical center on Long Island.

And Stony Brook is still growing. To the students, scholars, health professionals, entrepreneurs, and all the members who make up our vibrant Stony Brook community, this is a not only a great local and national institution, but one that is working daily to make changes a reality on a global scale.
